A young woman in ancient China named Mulan took her father’s place to answer the draft and joined the army. This is a well-known story that has been told by Chinese people for thousands of years. Her aged father was drafted to fight against the Hun but because of her filial piety, Mulan could not bear to see him go and decided to disguise herself as a man and enter the service in his place.
Mulan served as a border guard for 12 years, covering herself with glory in her battlefield exploits. The emperor admired and affirmed her outstanding service and promoted her to a high rank. When she returned to her hometown in triumph, she took her uniform off and put on her dress and it was not until she reappeared in front of the crowd and they saw her feminine grace that the soldiers who escorted her home realized that Mulan was a heroine as courageous as any man!
