A deciduous tree, large, up to 22 m high. Bark smooth, light rusty-ash colour and aromatic. Shuck out of the bark of trees lasted for more than 20 years in summer, and then dried in the shade. Especially, magnolol resists gram-positive bacterium, acid-fast bacillus and hyphomycetes significantly and inhibits perversive streptococci.
